The Port Belly Project was founded in 2005 by Rebecca Prosino and Kathy Fontaine to provide dance opportunities, to change the general perception of bellydance, and to educate the public about this beautiful form of women’s dance.
Rebecca “Beeba” (left) first learned bellydance from Joan of Art in Red Lodge, MT in 2000. Kathy “Kahina” (right) began dancing with Beeba in 2002, and has been entranced with tribal dance ever since.
The troupe has grown and changed over the years. We have a home at Lotus Studio on Olive Street in the historic Highland neighborhood of Shreveport. Beeba now devotes her time to her family and career. Kahina has taken over as Director, teacher, and chief bottle washer.
Karla Haas “Chala” is our Assistant Director and has been dancing with the troupe since 2006. She keeps Kahina sane and works with our student troupe, The Port Belly Futures.
Barbara Conway “Habibi” is also instrumental to The Port Belly Project. Along with teaching beginner dance classes, she also conducts Poi and Hoop classes at Lotus Studio.
The core group ebbs and grows over time. It is composed of many strong women who have danced with the Troupe as time permits them. The Port Belly Project performs Tribal Fusion Bellydance; “Tribal” meaning dancing as a group and “Fusion” the melding of dance and costuming from many different cultures. From Old World Folk to Modern American Fusion, the PBP performs a wide array of dance styles to a variety of music. We present a family oriented show. Sorry, No Bellygrams or Bachelor Parties!
